Financial Aid and Related Help

Note regarding financial aid. Our list below contains local resources available year round as well as a few reliable national groups. We have found two outstanding nationwide directories of financieal and related aid. From Cancer Care (NY) comes their brand new web and paper edition of A Helping Hand: The Resource Guide for People with Cancer are now available at no cost.  In addition, the Patient Advocate Foundation has an interactive web site allowing easy research..  

Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center (Novant Health). Help for individuals and their families affected by cancer with free counseling, free classes, support groups, case management to help find financial and other assistance, lending boutique with wigs and headwear, and pastoral care. Call 704-384-5223 Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:30pm.www.novanthealth.org/PresbyterianMedicalCenter/Services/Cancer/Supportandadvocacyservices.aspx 

Cancer Care – Financial and related assistance. Limited financial assistance for cancer-related expenses such as home care, child care, gas money, pain medication, taxi fare to and from cancer treatment, and lymphedema suppllies for breast cancer only. They also have a special insurance copay program.  Note that they do not cover daily living expenses. Call 800-813-4673 Mon 9am-7pm; Tues-Fri 9am-5pm.http://www.cancercare.org 

Crisis Assistance Ministry. Crisis provides the following services.

  • emergency short-term help to pay for rent and utilities
  • deferred payment arrangements with utilities
  • free clothing, shoes, household goods, furniture and appliances
  • help identifying available public benefits.

Their goal is to help people stay in their own homes and become financially stable; they really care, but resources are limited. Check their website for a list of what to bring and other ways to make the first visit as helpful as possible. Hope Cancer Ministries. A small but passionate organization providing spiritual (prayer team), emotional (cards, visits), and practical support (meals, boxes of food including Ensure) for those affected by cancer.  The organization assists people regardless of their religious, social, economic, and ethnic association; their purpose is to show their love of Jesus Christ by serving those in need. Call 704-364-1440.www.hopecancer.org 

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – NC chapter (financial aid). The chapter providesfinancial aid to adults and children of up to $100 per year to help offset any expenses, and a co-pay insurance assistance program. Programs are limited by the availability of  funds and require an application at specific times. Check the designated web sites for details. Call with any questions at 919-367-4100 Mon-Fri 8am-4pm.

Matthews HELP Center. For residents of the greater Matthews area, they provide closely linked programs assisting Matthews residents including a food pantry, thrift boutique open to the public, medical equipment loan, limited emergency crisis financial assistance for basic needs, school supplies, limited free shopping in the thrift store, and winter holiday gift assistance.  Check web links for details. NC MedAssist. Access for residents of NC to prescription medications through an on-site pharmacy and by helping people use the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program to obtain medications from drug companies.  Recipients must have no insurance coverage for prescriptions and have income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Patient Advocate Foundation. PAF provides a wide variety of services for people with any chronic illness:

  • a web-based National Financial Aid Directory
  • direct disease-specfic co-pay relief
  • case management to assist patients and families with the following:
    • locating and applying for (but not providing) financial assistance
    • arbitration, mediation, and negotiation to settle issues with access to care, medication, devices, procedures, insurance, medical debt, and job retention related to the illness
    • identifying and utilizing prevention resources to preclude the occurrence of a disease or minimize its progression
  • asistencia al paciente en espanol

Pretty in Pink Foundation. This foundation was created to assist men and women who live in North Carolina who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and who have little or no health insurance. They assist them in receiving necessary medical treatment, education, and support that they might not be able to afford. Their eligibility requirementsand vision can be found on their website. Yvette W. Ferris Foundation.
